Self-Discipline and Technology
Being “Picky not Perfect” is a challenge in the times of technology and the internet.
Before it was easy to research easily available information to make an informed decision. Wanted to know if the movie you wanted to see what a good one or a flop, you read the newspaper, maybe watch one TV show with a couple reviewers. You made your decision and then took action.
In the days of the web it’s a nightmare. There are blogs, websites, news services, reviewers of every shape and size. Reading one review will show ads for 20 other sites that have an opinion too.
How do you move forward when your current method of operation is to understand all the variables, analyze and then decide?
Do you flounder surrounded by too many choices? Do you hang your head, overwhelmed and unable to move?
Or do you decide any action is better than no action and just roll the dice? You take the chance and just choose one – any one, doesn’t matter – it’s time to move ahead.
In the days of technology, you must operate within new boundaries. Set a timer – say “I’ll learn as much as I can in 20 minutes, make a decision – knowing that living and learning is better than searching and stalling”.
If too restrictive – use the technology to your advantage. Understand that the sites appearing on the top of the search list either A) pay to be there and feel they deserve higher value or B) are really good at keyword research and content placement. That in itself puts them heads and shoulders against the competition.
To set your research boundaries, limit how many internet sites you’ll visit before coming to a decision. After 3 or 4 sites (at the most) you should know enough information about whatever you are researching to feel confident in your decision. Or at least confident “enough”.
If you are one of those people sitting too close on the edge of “perfectionism”, you’ll never really be happy with your decision anyway, so you have to learn to just “jump”.
Those personality types lead us to a whole new conversation…
